“Moments before his impending execution, Bonnet, beneath the desperate sweat of his brow, shakily wrote to the Governor begging for Clemency, promising to remove both his arms and legs by way of assurance that he should keep to his vowel of redemption. It was a letter that was met with some pity, particularly from the local ladies who admired the sailor for his handsome looks and bookishness, but as oft the case it was plea that was not met with mercy and on the 10th of December 1718 Stede Bonnet was hung and killed…”

Awkwardly named ‘The Unfortunate Career of Stede Bonnet, 1688-1718’, The Shudders debut album is being readied for her maiden voyage. She has been constructed from the finest rhythms and rigged with often wistful poetry. She stands 125mm tall and almost 145mm from fore to aft. Her figure head looms with melancholy yet with a hint of a wry smile, the eyes haunt yet still twinkle and her posture gallant yet suggestive and wench like. She sings soft her siren song, a poisonous melody, luring and wild, enough so to lure in any wild old seaman. Laden with a cargo of jigs such as ‘Lost and Broke’, casks of country punk such as ‘Words of a Fool’, and even a small case of epic ballads such as ‘It was I That Shot My Comrade Down’, all thrown into the hold for good measure. She is a truly superb yet subtle blend of the old world and new…from deeply touching and forlorn to foot tapping and just plain fun. She is not, however, a boat.

Formed in 2007 the band (Daniel Moody, Liam O’Neill, Alan Marshall and Tim Owen) quickly found themselves playing all across the country, including the ‘Borderline’ in London, the ‘Fleece’ in Bristol, ‘The Jericho’ in Oxford, ‘The Hobbit’ in Southampton and many more besides. They also headlined the Radio 1 Big Weekend Unofficial Fringe Festival and the Swindon Shuffle (the UK’s biggest unsigned music festival).

They have also shared the stage with such bands as The Young Republic, Ox, Chris Helme (of The Seahorses) and Tom Baxter. During this time the band gained a reputation for stunning live shows and developed an unusually strong set of songs. Leaving the delusions of following latest trends to others The Shudders instead concentrate their efforts into creating songs with simple melodies and powerful rhythms and embrace their compositions with an open mind and a warm hearty hug…and more often than not copious amounts of rum and ale (thus the thirst quenching and refreshing sound). Each song has seemingly been composed with great purpose, each song meriting its own place on the album, each of the 12 songs helping to complete what is a very unique and beautiful album. “I guess we pull in influences from different spectrums, there are four people in the band and we each like to all draw upon our own individual influences. I think that shows in all our songs. Certainly there are flavours of country, indie, traditional Irish, rock and pop to savour.”

The Shudders began recording their debut album in the spring of 2009 at the picturesque Mooncalf Studios, alongside Nick Beere who engineered and helped with the production. The recording was finally completed in October. “The Unfortunate Career of Stede Bonnet, 1688-1718”, will be released on Monday 21st December 2009 on CD and Digital Download (iTunes, Napster, Amazon MP3, etc.) The debut single ‘I’ll Be The Dog You Can Kick’ has already been a success for the band, enjoying a 3rd place spot in the Amazon folk download chart and is a available from those same download services for just 79p.
